Newly appointed detective DI Bolam is making a fresh start in the east-coast hometown of his deceased, estranged wife, getting to know a family he has never learned how to like.

In this new setting, Bolam struggles to make connections, finding it easier to focus on the one thing he does better than almost anyone else: seeing those connections in the lives of others, and specifically in the lives of people affected by major crime.
